How Much Is Variscite Worth?
A soft, apple-green phosphate mineral often mistaken for its harder, more famous cousin turquoise — and priced very differently once you know what to look for.
Variscite rarely gets to be famous on its own terms. Walk past a tray of green-blue cabochons in a market stall and there is a good chance the seller — knowingly or not — calls the whole tray “turquoise,” when a good share of it is variscite: a different mineral entirely, with a different chemistry, different hardness and, usually, a friendlier price. Chemically it is a hydrated aluminium phosphate, AlPO₄·2H₂O, and its bright, slightly acid-green colour comes from trace chromium and vanadium rather than the copper that colours turquoise blue.
That confusion is not entirely accidental. Variscite often forms with the same kind of dark, veiny matrix that makes spiderweb turquoise so collectible, it takes a similar cabochon cut, and lower grades are treated with the same stabilising resins used on soft turquoise. The difference is that variscite is, mineral for mineral, considerably less scarce and less storied than fine turquoise, so a stone correctly sold as variscite should cost meaningfully less — and a stone quietly sold as “turquoise” that is actually variscite is being overpriced, treatment or not.

What variscite actually is
Variscite is a hydrated aluminium phosphate, AlPO₄·2H₂O, crystallising in the orthorhombic system, almost always found as massive, cryptocrystalline nodules, crusts or vein-fillings rather than as visible individual crystals. Its characteristic apple- to bluish-green colour comes from trace chromium and vanadium, and material often carries a dark brown to black matrix of the surrounding host rock threaded through it in veins, much like the webbing prized in fine turquoise. At Mohs 4 to 5, it is slightly harder than the softest turquoise grades but still soft enough to scratch, absorb oils and wear at the edges of a cabochon without care.
The best-known historical source is Utah in the United States, particularly the Fairfield and Clay Canyon deposits, which gave rise to the old trade name “Utahlite” for fine Utah variscite. Other significant localities include the Vogtland region of Germany (the mineral’s type locality), parts of Australia, and Spain. How it is valued
Colour and evenness matter most: a bright, saturated, uniform apple-green outsells pale, grey-green or blotchy material. Matrix pattern is the next lever — attractive, well-balanced dark veining across a fine green ground is prized much like spiderweb patterning in turquoise, while a chaotic or dominant matrix drags the price down. Treatment and condition matter a great deal because variscite is porous and relatively soft: natural, untreated material with good, stable colour commands a premium over stabilised or dyed stones of similar appearance. Honest identification is arguably the single biggest value factor of all, since material correctly sold as variscite should cost less than comparable turquoise, and buyers who are told “turquoise” when they are getting variscite are simply being overcharged. - Softness and porosity. At Mohs 4–5 and often porous, variscite scratches, absorbs oils and can fade or dull with rough handling; it needs the same gentle care as soft turquoise.
- Undisclosed stabilisation or dyeing. Commercial-grade variscite is frequently resin-stabilised or colour-enhanced, much like lower turquoise grades; this should be disclosed, and untreated material deserves a premium.
- Sold or priced as turquoise. The most common issue in the market — variscite offered, deliberately or carelessly, at turquoise prices. Ask for the mineral to be named correctly, and confirm identification on higher-value pieces — see reading a lab report.
