How Much Is Chrysoprase Worth?
The finest of all the chalcedonies — an apple-green translucent stone coloured by nickel. Its two enemies are a dye pot and a sunny windowsill.
Among the chalcedonies — the family that includes carnelian, agate, onyx and bloodstone — chrysoprase is the aristocrat. Its best expression is an even, translucent, luminous apple-green that has been prized since antiquity; it was a favourite of Frederick the Great of Prussia and decorates chapels and palaces across central Europe. It is still the chalcedony that commands the highest prices, and among opaque-to-translucent green stones it offers a colour that can genuinely rival far more expensive material.
But it is also one of the most commonly imitated green stones, because cheap grey or white chalcedony takes dye readily, and dyed chalcedony sold as chrysoprase is everywhere. And unlike most quartz, natural chrysoprase has a genuine care requirement. Both facts are central to buying it well.
What chrysoprase actually is
Chrysoprase is a green variety of chalcedony, which is itself a cryptocrystalline (very fine-grained) form of quartz, silicon dioxide. It sits at about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale — the durability of quartz — and it is translucent to opaque, never fully transparent. Its colour is caused by finely dispersed hydrated nickel silicate minerals within the silica. That nickel origin is the key distinction: it separates chrysoprase from chromium-coloured greens like jade and emerald, and it explains both the particular apple-green hue and the fading behaviour discussed below.
The most prized material is often called “prime” chrysoprase: highly translucent, evenly coloured, with a rich but bright green — sometimes a lemon-lime cast — and no cloudy patches or matrix. Because chalcedony is not transparent, chrysoprase is almost always cut as cabochons, beads or carvings rather than faceted, and value is judged on the evenness and depth of colour and the degree of translucency.
Where it comes from
The classic modern source is Queensland, Australia, particularly the Marlborough district, which has produced much of the world’s finest translucent material — so much so that chrysoprase is sometimes marketed, misleadingly, as “Australian jade.” Historically, the famous deposit was at Szklary in Lower Silesia (Poland), the source Frederick the Great drew on. Chrysoprase also comes from Tanzania, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Madagascar and the United States. Origin is a minor price factor; colour, translucency and evenness do almost all the work.

These are Fair Carat’s synthesis of observed retail listings, not survey data. Chrysoprase is affordable by the standards of fine coloured stones, but genuinely translucent, evenly coloured prime material is scarce and priced accordingly.
Watch-outs
- Dyed chalcedony sold as chrysoprase. The central risk. Grey or white chalcedony and agate dye green very convincingly and very cheaply. The tells: colour that is too uniform and slightly “off” — a bluish or artificial green rather than a warm apple-green — and, under magnification, dye concentrated in cracks and along grain boundaries where it pools darker than the body. Natural chrysoprase colour is intrinsic and even; dye sits in the structure unevenly. Ask directly whether the colour is natural.
- Fading. This is chrysoprase’s real quirk. Because the colour is tied to hydrated nickel compounds, prolonged exposure to heat, strong sunlight or dehydration can cause the green to weaken, sometimes noticeably. The good news is that mild fading can often be partly reversed by rehydrating the stone in water; the practical advice is to keep chrysoprase out of hot cars, direct display lighting and sunny windowsills. A seller who denies any fading tendency is not being straight with you.
- “Lemon chrysoprase” that isn’t chrysoprase. Some yellow-green Australian material sold as “lemon chrysoprase” is actually a nickel-bearing rock of magnesite and quartz — attractive, but not true chalcedony chrysoprase. It is a naming issue rather than a fraud, but it affects what you are actually buying.
- Confusion with gem silica and jade. Blue-green chrysocolla chalcedony (“gem silica”) is copper-coloured and usually more valuable; green jadeite and nephrite are chromium- or iron-coloured and priced quite differently. Chrysoprase should not be sold at jade prices under the “Australian jade” label.
- Backed or stabilised thin pieces. Thin slices can be glued to a dark backing to deepen apparent colour. Inspect the back and girdle for seams.

Ask two questions: is the colour natural, and how should I store it?
A warm, even apple-green with real translucency is the signature of natural chrysoprase. If the green looks bluish and machine-perfect, suspect dye. And a straight-dealing seller will tell you to keep it out of heat and strong sun — because natural chrysoprase can fade.

Finely dispersed hydrated nickel silicate minerals within the chalcedony. That nickel origin distinguishes it from the chromium greens of emerald and jade, gives chrysoprase its particular apple-green hue, and is why the colour can fade with heat and dehydration.
Is my chrysoprase dyed?
It might be, because dyed grey chalcedony is a very common substitute. Look for colour that is too uniform or slightly bluish-artificial, and for dye pooling in cracks under magnification. Natural chrysoprase colour is warm, even and intrinsic. When in doubt, ask the seller directly and, for a serious purchase, get it checked.
Does chrysoprase really fade?
Yes, it can. Prolonged heat, strong sunlight or dehydration can weaken the green because the colour is tied to hydrated nickel compounds. Mild fading can sometimes be partly reversed by soaking the stone in water. Store it away from hot cars, sunny windows and hot display lights.
Is chrysoprase a type of jade?
No. It is sometimes marketed as “Australian jade,” but that is a misnomer. Chrysoprase is a green chalcedony (quartz family); jade is either jadeite or nephrite, coloured differently and priced differently. It should not be sold at jade prices on the strength of the nickname.
Is chrysoprase durable enough for a ring?
At Mohs 6.5 to 7 it is as durable as other quartz gems and fine for rings with normal care. Its cabochon form is fairly robust. The main caution is not hardness but colour stability — keep it out of sustained heat and strong sun.
