How Much Is Chrysocolla Worth?

A gloriously blue-green copper mineral that is soft and porous on its own — so the real money sits with the tough, translucent “gem silica” chalcedony it colours, not the crumbly matrix cabochons.

Chrysocolla is a hydrous copper silicate that forms as blue to blue-green crusts. In its pure state it is very soft (Mohs about 2–4) and porous, so it is usually cut with quartz or chalcedony intergrown to hold it together. The prized exception is gem silica — chalcedony coloured by chrysocolla, hard at about Mohs 7 and translucent electric blue. Colour, translucency and which material you are actually buying set the price; soft matrix stones are inexpensive, and much commercial material is stabilised.

Chrysocolla is one of the most seductive blues in the mineral world — a copper stone that ranges from robin’s-egg cyan through deep teal to green, often swirled with black, brown or the bright green of malachite. Chemically it is a hydrous copper silicate, and that copper is where the colour comes from. The catch is that pure chrysocolla is soft and porous: on the Mohs scale it sits somewhere around 2 to 4, closer to a fingernail than to quartz, and it will scratch, chip and soak up grime if worn hard. For that reason it is rarely cut on its own.

What confuses buyers is that “chrysocolla” on a label can mean very different things. Most affordable cabochons are chrysocolla intergrown with quartz, or a mixed copper-mineral rock; the beautiful “Eilat stone” is a natural blend of chrysocolla, malachite and turquoise. The genuine gem is different again: gem silica, a translucent chalcedony coloured by chrysocolla, which is hard, takes a glassy polish and can rival fine turquoise in price. Knowing which of these you are looking at — and how much of it is natural versus stabilised — is the whole game when buying chrysocolla well.

What chrysocolla actually is

Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper silicate that forms in the oxidised zones of copper deposits, typically as botryoidal crusts, coatings and vein fillings rather than as clean crystals. It is amorphous to cryptocrystalline, and its colour — from cyan and sky-blue to blue-green and green — comes from copper. Because it is soft (Mohs roughly 2 to 4) and porous, pure chrysocolla is fragile and thirsty, so lapidaries usually cut material where it is naturally intergrown with, or replaced by, silica.

That intergrowth is what separates the tiers. When chalcedony (a form of quartz) is coloured by chrysocolla, the result is gem silica — sometimes called chrysocolla chalcedony — which is hard at about Mohs 7, translucent and durable enough for rings. Softer commercial cabochons are chrysocolla held together by quartz veining, and “Eilat stone” from the Middle East is a natural mix of chrysocolla with malachite and turquoise. Which material comes first: translucent gem silica sits at the top, solid opaque cabochons in the middle, and soft, chalky or heavily matrixed pieces at the bottom. Colour leads within each tier — a clean, saturated blue or blue-green is worth more than a pale, greyish or muddy stone. Translucency lifts gem silica sharply, since a glowing, backlit blue is the whole appeal. Pattern and matrix matter for cabochons: attractive, even colour beats distracting black or brown streaks, though some buyers like a bit of contrast. Finally, size and cut count, and because soft material is porous, stabilisation is common and should be disclosed. Is chrysocolla valuable?

Mostly it is an affordable decorative stone: common tumbled pieces and matrix cabochons cost only a few dollars to a few tens of dollars each. The exception is gem silica — translucent chalcedony coloured by chrysocolla — which is a genuine gem and can run from tens to hundreds of dollars per carat. So “valuable” depends entirely on which material you mean.

What is gem silica chrysocolla?

Gem silica is chalcedony (a form of quartz) coloured a vivid blue by chrysocolla. Unlike soft pure chrysocolla, it is hard at about Mohs 7, translucent and durable, which is why it takes a high polish and commands the highest prices of any chrysocolla material. It is the form to look for if you want a wearable, true-gem stone.

Is chrysocolla hard enough for a ring?
