Gemstone Treatments & Disclosure
Most gems on the market have been enhanced somehow. That is normal and legal — as long as you are told. Here is what to ask before you buy.
Here is a fact that surprises most first-time buyers: if you own a coloured gemstone, the odds are high that it has been treated. Heating sapphire and ruby to improve colour is so routine that untreated stones are the exception, not the rule. Nearly all blue topaz on the market is irradiated. Most emeralds have oil or resin in their fractures. None of this is fraud. Treatment has been part of the gem trade for centuries, and the industry standard is simple: it must be disclosed.
Disclosure matters for two practical reasons. First, value: a treated stone is generally worth less than an untreated equivalent, sometimes dramatically so. Second, care: some treatments are permanent and worry-free, while others are fragile and demand gentle handling. Knowing what was done tells you both what you should pay and how to look after the stone.
The common treatments, and how stable they are
Heat
The oldest and most widespread. Controlled heating deepens or clarifies colour in sapphire, ruby, tanzanite, aquamarine, zircon and amethyst, among others. Done well, heating is permanent and stable, which is why the trade broadly accepts it. The premium sits with stones that reach fine colour without it — an unheated ruby with a laboratory report to prove it commands a strong markup.
Oiling and resin filling
Emeralds are typically fracture-filled with cedarwood oil or a hardened resin to improve apparent clarity. Reports grade the extent as none, minor, moderate or significant. This treatment is common and expected, but it is not permanent: oil can dry out or leak, which is why emeralds should never be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath.
Irradiation
Radiation followed by heating creates the familiar sky-blue and London-blue topaz, and some coloured diamonds. The colour is stable, and reputable material is held until any residual radioactivity has decayed to safe levels before sale.
Diffusion
Elements such as titanium or beryllium are driven into corundum at high temperature to add or intensify colour. Surface diffusion colours only a thin skin, which can be lost if the stone is recut; beryllium (lattice) diffusion penetrates deeper. Both must be disclosed and both reduce value versus a naturally coloured stone.
Dyeing
Porous or low-grade material — some agate, jade, and pale stones — is dyed to enrich colour. Dye can fade and is often unstable. Dyed jade, known in the trade as “C jade,” is worth a fraction of untreated “A jade.”
Fracture filling and composites
Glass, especially lead glass, is used to fill cavities and cracks. Lead-glass-filled “composite” ruby looks like solid ruby but is a fragile hybrid worth very little, and it can be damaged by ordinary jewellers’ cleaning and repair.

Watch-outs
- Composite ruby sold as “natural ruby.” The classic trap. Lead-glass-filled ruby is cheap and fragile but can look convincing. If a “ruby” price seems too good to be true, ask directly whether it is glass-filled.
- “Enhanced” as a catch-all. The word is legitimate but vague. Ask which treatment specifically, and whether it is stable or needs special care.
- Silence on treatment. A seller who cannot or will not say what has been done is a warning in itself. Routine treatments are nothing to hide.
- Unstable colour. Dyed and some diffused stones can fade or lose colour if recut or worn hard. Match the treatment to how you plan to wear the piece.
- Ultrasonic and steam on the wrong stone. Oiled emeralds, dyed material and glass-filled stones can be damaged by aggressive cleaning. When in doubt, clean gently with lukewarm water.
The honest takeaway is not to fear treatment. It is to insist on knowing. A disclosed, stable treatment on a beautiful stone is perfectly good value; the same treatment hidden, or a fragile one sold as solid, is where buyers lose money. Treatment is normal; hiding it is not. Buy from sellers who state the treatment plainly, and get a report for anything where untreated status is part of the price.

Are treated gemstones worth buying?
Yes, provided the treatment is disclosed and stable. Most coloured stones on the market are treated, and a well-treated stone can be beautiful and good value. The key is knowing what was done so you pay the right price and care for it correctly.
Is heating a gemstone considered acceptable?
Broadly, yes. Heating is the oldest and most widespread treatment, and when done well it is permanent, so the trade accepts it. The premium goes to stones that reach fine colour without heat, ideally confirmed by a laboratory report.
What is glass-filled or “composite” ruby?
It is low-grade corundum whose cracks and cavities are filled with lead glass to look like a solid ruby. It is fragile, can be damaged by normal cleaning or repair, and is worth only a small fraction of an untreated or merely heated ruby. It must be disclosed.
How do I know if a stone is treated?
Ask the seller directly, and for anything of value obtain a report from a recognised laboratory. Reports state detected treatments — for example “no indications of heating” on a sapphire, or the degree of filling on an emerald.
