How Much Is Kyanite Worth?
A sapphire-blue stone with a party trick no other gem shares: it is soft one way and hard the other. That single fact shapes how it is cut, how it is worn, and what it costs.
Kyanite is one of gemmology’s better teaching stones, because it visibly breaks a rule everyone learns first: that a mineral has a single hardness. It does not. Drag a point along the length of a kyanite blade and it scratches at about Mohs 4.5 to 5; drag it across the blade and the same crystal resists at 6.5 to 7. This directional hardness even gave the stone an old name, disthene, from the Greek for “two strengths.”
That quirk is not a curiosity for buyers — it is the whole story of why kyanite is priced the way it is. It is why the stone is difficult to cut, why clean faceted material stays small and scarce, and why you should think carefully before setting it in a knockabout ring.
What kyanite actually is
Kyanite is an aluminium silicate, Al2SiO5 — the same chemistry as andalusite and sillimanite, its polymorphs, which form under different pressures and temperatures. It crystallises in the triclinic system as long, flat, bladed crystals, and its name comes from the Greek kyanos, “blue.” The classic colour is a rich blue caused by traces of iron and titanium — the same colouring pair that blues a sapphire — but kyanite also occurs in green, orange, colourless, grey and black. It has perfect cleavage in one direction and good cleavage in another, which, with the variable hardness, makes it brittle in the ways that matter for jewellery.
Most kyanite mined in the world never becomes a gem at all: it is an important industrial mineral, used in heat-resistant refractories. Gem-quality transparent material is a small, choice fraction of the total.
What drives the price
Colour. The dominant factor. The most valued kyanite is an intense, even, sapphire-like blue, and the finest of this has historically come from Nepal and, more recently, other Himalayan and East African sources. Pale, greyish or streaky blue is common and cheap; a deep, saturated, evenly distributed blue is what commands a premium.
Colour evenness. Kyanite is notorious for colour zoning — streaks and patches where the blue concentrates unevenly, often along the length of the blade. Even colour across the whole face-up view is scarcer and worth more; streaky stones are discounted.
Clarity and size. Because of cleavage and the difficulty of cutting, clean faceted kyanite tends to be small. Larger clean stones with fine even colour are the scarce, expensive end of the market. Rare orange kyanite from Tanzania, coloured by manganese, and cat’s-eye cabochons are collector niches.

Watch-outs
- Cleavage and directional softness — wear it carefully. This is the honest headline. Perfect cleavage plus a hardness as low as 4.5 in one direction means kyanite can scratch and cleave more readily than its across-blade 6.5–7 suggests. It makes a lovely pendant or earring stone and an acceptable occasional ring stone in a protective setting, but it is not built for daily hard wear. Manage expectations accordingly.
- Colour zoning and streakiness. Judge the stone face-up for even colour. Many kyanites show the blue concentrated in bands or patches; a stone that reads evenly across the whole table is worth more than one that is patchy, even at the same weight.
- Windowing. Because kyanite is awkward to cut, weight-retention cuts with shallow pavilions are common, producing a see-through window that leaks colour. Look straight down: if the centre goes pale and transparent, the cut is compromised.
- Confusion with sapphire, tanzanite, iolite and blue spinel. Blue kyanite can be mistaken for all of these. Its bladed habit, cleavage, variable hardness and optical properties separate it for a gemmologist, but not in a listing photo. Be wary of a “blue sapphire” priced suspiciously low.
- Rarely treated — which is a plus, so verify the claim. Gem kyanite is typically natural and untreated, which is part of its appeal. That also means a stone sold as “untreated” should genuinely be so; there is little routine enhancement to hide, so honesty here is easy to expect.
Some traditions associate kyanite with alignment and clear communication. Those are cultural and metaphysical beliefs rather than established facts, and they have no bearing on its market value, which rests on colour, evenness, clarity, cut and size.

A clean, evenly coloured deep-blue kyanite is a genuine bargain against sapphire. Just judge the colour face-up for streaking, check the centre isn’t a window, and remember the cleavage — protective settings and gentle wear keep it looking its best.
