How Much Is Sphene Worth?
It throws more fire than a diamond — literally. But sphene is soft, and the same optical extravagance that dazzles you also doubles every facet you look through.
Sphene is the gem the fire-chasers keep for themselves. Its claim to fame is a single number: a dispersion of about 0.051, comfortably higher than diamond’s 0.044. Dispersion is the optical property that splits white light into rainbow flashes — the “fire” a good cut throws back at you — and sphene throws more of it than almost any common gem, in a way that is genuinely arresting when the colour is a bright chartreuse or golden green.
It is also a lesson in why fire alone does not make a mainstream gem. Sphene is soft, it is optically busy in ways that take getting used to, and clean material is scarce. Understanding those trade-offs is exactly what separates a fair price from a disappointing one.
What sphene actually is
Sphene is titanite, a calcium titanium silicate (CaTiSiO5), crystallising in the monoclinic system, usually as wedge-shaped crystals — the name sphene comes from the Greek sphenos, “wedge.” Mineralogists prefer “titanite”; the trade still says “sphene.” It sits at about 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, has distinct cleavage, and shows an adamantine (near-diamond) lustre. Its colours run through yellow, honey-brown, orange and green, with the most prized being a vivid chrome green coloured by traces of chromium, from Madagascar and East Africa.
Two optical properties define the buying experience. The dispersion gives the fire. The very high birefringence — the stone splits light into two rays travelling at different speeds — produces obvious facet doubling: look through the table and the back facet edges appear as double lines. This is not a flaw or a sign of a fake; it is intrinsic to titanite, and cutters orient stones to manage it while maximising the fire.
What drives the price
Colour. Bright, clean chartreuse-green and golden-green stones, especially chromium-coloured greens, sit at the top. Dull browns and murky yellows are cheaper. Vivid colour that lets the fire read clearly is what buyers pay for.
Fire and cut. Sphene lives or dies on its cut. A well-proportioned stone returns dazzling dispersion; a poorly cut one looks dark or muddy despite the potential. Because the material is soft and cleaves, skilled cutting is both harder and more valuable here than in a tougher gem.
Clarity and size. Clean sphene is scarce, and the strong doubling can make inclusions harder to read. Larger clean stones with fine colour and lively fire are the expensive end; most fine sphene is under a few carats.

Watch-outs
- Softness — a collector and pendant gem, not a daily ring stone. At Mohs 5 to 5.5 with distinct cleavage, sphene scratches and can chip more easily than quartz, let alone sapphire. It is glorious in pendants, earrings and occasional-wear pieces, and it is a joy on a collector’s shelf; in a ring worn every day it needs a protective setting and realistic expectations, or it will abrade.
- Facet doubling is normal, not a defect. The strong birefringence makes back facets appear doubled and can give the stone a slightly “soft” or fuzzy look through the table. This is intrinsic to titanite and is not evidence of damage or a fake. It is part of the character; learn to expect it rather than treat it as a flaw.
- Cut quality is decisive. More than in most gems, a poor cut wastes sphene’s fire and can leave it looking dark. Judge the stone for lively dispersion and brightness face-up; a listing photo taken under a spotlight can flatter a mediocre cut.
- Heat and knocks. Sphene dislikes sudden temperature changes and ultrasonic cleaners, and its cleavage means sharp knocks can start a break. Clean it gently with warm soapy water and a soft brush.
- Confusion with other green gems. Bright green sphene can be confused with demantoid garnet, chrome tourmaline, peridot or grossular. Its extreme fire, strong doubling and adamantine lustre separate it for a gemmologist, but a photo can mislead. Rare treatments aside, gem sphene is typically natural.
Some traditions associate sphene with clarity of thought and creativity. Those are cultural and metaphysical beliefs, not established facts, and they have no bearing on the market value, which rests on colour, fire, cut, clarity and size.
