How Much Is Kunzite Worth?
Enormous, clean, pink-lilac and startlingly cheap — because the colour can fade in sunlight. The trade calls it the evening stone, and the trade is right.
Pink gem spodumene reached George Frederick Kunz, then Tiffany & Co.’s chief gemologist, in December 1902; the material came from a claim near Pala in San Diego County, California. Kunz identified it as spodumene, but the pink-lilac colour had not been recorded in the species before. The chemist Charles Baskerville named the new variety kunzite in Kunz’s honour in 1903. The green, chromium-coloured variety of the same mineral — hiddenite — had already been described from Alexander County, North Carolina in 1881, and named after the mining engineer William Earl Hidden.
Spodumene is a lithium aluminium silicate, LiAl(SiO3)2, and the same mineral that supplies much of the world’s battery lithium. Gem material comes mainly from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Brazil and Madagascar. Hardness is 6.5–7 on the Mohs scale — respectable on paper, and misleading in practice, for reasons we come to below.
The fade problem — the honest core of this page
Kunzite’s colour comes from trace manganese substituting for aluminium in the crystal lattice, specifically Mn3+ colour centres. Those centres are not permanently stable. Prolonged exposure to strong light — sunlight above all, but also intense display lighting and heat — drives the manganese towards a different valency state and the pink drains away. The GIA states it plainly: whether natural or enhanced, kunzite’s colour can fade when exposed to heat and intense light, and it recommends storing the stone in a closed box when it is not being worn.
Two honest qualifications. First, this is not a switch that flips. It is cumulative, gradual and unpredictable, because it depends on the individual stone’s chemistry, the intensity and spectrum of the light, and the total hours of exposure. Reports of natural kunzites losing a modest percentage of saturation over years are common; catastrophic bleaching in a season is not the normal experience. Second, it is generally not reversible in any practical sense — you cannot put the colour back.
So the practical guidance is simple, and it is the reason the trade nicknamed kunzite the evening stone:
- It is an excellent occasional-wear and evening stone. Dinners, parties, indoor life — it will be fine for a very long time.
- It is a poor choice for a daily ring worn outdoors, on a hand that is in sunlight for hours a day, year after year.
- Store it away from light. A closed box, not a sunny windowsill dish. This costs nothing and removes most of the risk.
A seller who tells you this before you ask is a seller worth buying from.
Irradiation and heat treatment
Some kunzite is irradiated, often followed by heating, to deepen a washed-out pink into a stronger pink or violet. This is an established treatment and the GIA names it explicitly. The problem is stability: colour produced or intensified by irradiation is typically less stable than natural colour and fades faster under the same light. You are buying a saturation that is, in effect, on a shorter clock.
Two things follow. First, disclosure at the low end is patchy at best. Nothing about a finished stone announces its history, and there is no quick, routine test that separates irradiated kunzite from untreated material — detection is a laboratory question, not a loupe question. Second, this is a genuine reason to be sceptical of unusually saturated cheap material. Kunzite’s natural colour is generally pale to medium; a vivid, deeply saturated stone offered at commercial-grade money is a combination that ought to prompt a direct question, in writing, about treatment.
Why it is cheap for its size — and why that is the opportunity
Spodumene forms in lithium-rich granite pegmatites, and it forms big: crystals metres long are on record, and gem rough of tens or hundreds of carats is routine. It is also unusually clean — kunzite crystals often carry few inclusions, so eye-clean finished stones are the norm rather than the exception. The Smithsonian holds a faceted heart-shaped kunzite of 880 carats.
Combine abundance, large clean rough and a fade risk that professional buyers price in, and you get the defining fact about kunzite’s market: the price per carat barely climbs with size. In most coloured stones, doubling the carat weight multiplies the per-carat price. In kunzite it nudges it. A 15-carat kunzite is not a rarity commanding a rarity premium; it is Tuesday.
That is the fair verdict. For a buyer who understands the fade risk and the treatment question, kunzite offers extraordinary size per pound — a large, clean, genuinely beautiful pink-lilac gem for money that would buy a chip of morganite and nothing at all of pink sapphire. It is cheap for reasons, not by accident, and the reasons are manageable if you know them.
Cutting difficulty and wearability
Spodumene has perfect cleavage in two directions, meeting at roughly 87 degrees, and it is brittle. Cutters describe kunzite as genuinely awkward: stones have been known to come apart under the pressure of faceting. On top of that it is strongly pleochroic — the best, deepest colour looks down the length of the crystal, the c-axis, and a cutter who orients for colour is fighting the cleavage while doing it. Many kunzites are cut deep for exactly this reason, which is why a big kunzite often weighs more than its face-up size suggests.
The same cleavage is what makes the 6.5–7 hardness misleading. Kunzite resists scratching reasonably well but splits from a knock. A protective setting — bezel or half-bezel, shielded corners — is sensible. Never ultrasonic, never steam: warm soapy water and a soft brush.

Watch-outs
- Fade risk not disclosed. The single most common omission in kunzite listings. If the seller has not mentioned light sensitivity anywhere, they are either not informed or not telling you.
- Vivid saturation at commercial prices. Natural kunzite is usually pale to medium. Deep colour at bargain money points towards irradiation — and irradiated colour fades faster. Ask, in writing.
- “Untreated” asserted without a lab report. There is no routine loupe or refractometer test that settles this. An unsupported claim is just a claim.
- Photographs shot under strong or coloured light. Kunzite photographs far better than it looks in an ordinary room, and pale stones are routinely made to look saturated. Ask for daylight-balanced video.
- Cleavage damage sold as an inclusion. Look for straight, flat internal planes catching the light — incipient cleavage, not a feather. It is a structural weakness and it should be reflected in the price.
- Priced like a rarity because it is large. Big clean kunzite is normal. Size alone does not justify a per-carat premium in this species — colour does.
- Ultrasonic or steam cleaning. Both risk splitting the stone along its cleavage. Warm soapy water only.

Does kunzite really fade?

The practical signal is saturation relative to price: unusually vivid colour offered cheaply deserves a direct written question about treatment, because irradiated colour tends to fade faster.
Can I wear a kunzite ring every day?
Not ideally. Spodumene has perfect cleavage in two directions and is brittle, so it splits from knocks despite a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7 — and a hand worn in daylight is the worst place for a light-sensitive stone. A protected bezel setting and occasional wear is the right answer. Pendants and earrings suit kunzite far better than rings.
