How Much Is Paraíba Tourmaline Worth?
Copper turns an ordinary tourmaline into one of the most expensive coloured gems on earth. The word on the report that decides the price is not “Paraíba” — it is the origin line underneath it.
Tourmaline is a huge and generally affordable mineral group. We cover the family as a whole in our tourmaline value guide, where good stones run from tens to a few hundred pounds per carat. Paraíba tourmaline sits in a different economy entirely. It is the same mineral species — elbaite — but with a trace of copper in the crystal lattice, and that copper does something no other colouring agent in tourmaline does. It produces a blue-to-green that appears to be lit from inside. The trade calls it “neon” or “electric”, and for once the marketing language is close to accurate.
The result is one of the most expensive coloured gemstones by weight in the world, sold in a market that is thin, secretive and full of stones whose paperwork matters more than their appearance.
What actually makes it Paraíba
The chemistry. Paraíba tourmaline is cuprian elbaite — a lithium-bearing tourmaline, formula roughly Na(Li1.5Al1.5)Al6(Si6O18)(BO3)3(OH)3(OH,F), carrying copper and manganese. Copper (Cu2+) is the chromophore that produces the vivid blue-to-green. GIA’s research notes that trace copper turns up in many ordinary tourmalines at single-digit to tens of parts per million, but that at least several hundred ppm is needed before you see the Paraíba effect. In GIA’s reference set, Brazilian material averaged roughly 11,400 ppm copper against under 2,000 ppm for the African stones.
The role of manganese. Manganese in the trivalent state (Mn3+) adds purple and pink. Combined with copper it pushes the stone towards violet and mauve, away from the pure neon blue the market wants. This matters enormously for treatment, as you will see below.
The discovery. The deposit was found in the Brazilian state of Paraíba, at the Mina da Batalha near the village of São José da Batalha, Salgadinho, in the Borborema pegmatite province. The prospector credited with it is Heitor Dimas Barbosa, who by most accounts worked the hillside for years on a hunch before the copper-bearing pocket was reached. The gems reached the market in 1989; sources differ over whether the first material came out of the ground in 1987, 1988 or 1989, and Fair Carat treats the precise year as contested. Similar material was subsequently found in the neighbouring Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Norte. Brazilian production from the original workings has been small and is now largely exhausted.
The nomenclature fight — and why it decides your price
This is the part of the story a buyer cannot afford to skip.
Copper-bearing tourmaline of very similar appearance was found in Nigeria around 2000–2001, and in Mozambique shortly after. GIA records that Mozambican material was first recovered in 2001, that its copper content was not recognised until 2003, and that it was not widely sold with its origin disclosed until 2005 — which tells you a good deal about the commercial temperature at the time.
The trade then split, bitterly. One camp argued “Paraíba” is a locality: a Brazilian place name, and applying it to African stones is a misrepresentation dressed up as terminology. The other argued it is a variety name like “kunzite” or “alexandrite” — named after a first-found place, but describing a material, not a passport.
The variety camp won at institutional level. CIBJO accepted “paraíba” as a valid trade name in 1999. In February 2006 the International Gemstone Industry Laboratory Conference accepted “paraíba tourmaline” as a variety name regardless of geographic origin, and in April 2006 the Laboratory Manual Harmonisation Committee (LMHC) adopted the same position.
The current LMHC definition (Information Sheet #6, version 8, February 2023) reads: a paraíba tourmaline is “a blue (electric blue, neon blue, violet blue), bluish green to greenish blue, green or yellowish green tourmaline, of medium-light to high saturation and tone (relative to this variety of tourmaline), mainly due to the presence of copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) of whatever geographical origin”. It adds that the name derives from the Brazilian locality where the gemstone was first mined. LMHC signatories include GIA, SSEF, Gübelin, GIT, CGL, DSEF and CISGEM.
What that means on a report. Under the LMHC wording a report will show something close to:

So: a Mozambican stone can carry a report that says “Paraíba tourmaline”, and that report is correct. Anyone who tells you this is automatically fraud is out of date. The fraud, where it happens, is in the silence — letting a buyer assume Brazilian origin from a variety line that never claimed it, and pricing accordingly.
Note the two exclusions in the LMHC sheet, which the trade often ignores. Tourmalines with only traces of copper and low saturation, or colours outside the defined range, are not paraíba tourmaline. Nor is iron-rich copper-bearing tourmaline whose polarised spectrum shows the 700 nm band exceeding the copper-related 900 nm band. There is a real boundary here, and stones sit just outside it.
Origin, and why it cannot be eyeballed
GIA is explicit that geographic origin for these stones cannot be established by standard gemological testing. Inclusions, refractive index and microscopic features are broadly similar across all three countries. Origin determination rests almost entirely on quantitative trace-element chemistry by LA-ICP-MS, reading copper, zinc, gallium, strontium, tin and lead together. Nigerian stones tend to run high in strontium and lead; Mozambican stones high in gallium; Brazilian stones high in copper and sometimes zinc. No single element pair is decisive.
Even then, GIA reports that a minority of stones return an “inconclusive” origin because their chemistry does not match any reference sample. That is worth remembering when a dealer tells you an origin with total confidence and no paperwork.
What drives the price
Saturation and the neon quality. This dominates everything. The most valuable stones are neon blue at strong saturation and medium tone, often with a slight green secondary. A slight green secondary hue barely dents the price; a strong one does. Blue-green and green stones sell for less than pure blues, simply because the market associates paraíba with blue. Rarer pinks, violets and purples do not command a premium — demand for them is thin, and they are priced closer to ordinary tourmalines of those colours.
Size. Enormously. Clean faceted material above about two carats is genuinely rare, and above five carats rarer still, particularly from Brazil where the original crystals were small. Price per carat rises steeply with size rather than proportionally, so a fine 3 ct stone is worth considerably more than three times a fine 1 ct stone.
Origin. A multiplier, not a modifier. Fine Brazilian material routinely trades at several times the price of African material of comparable appearance. Whether that gap reflects a real average difference in colour or simply the prestige of the first locality is argued about constantly in the trade; the honest answer is that it is some of both, and that the premium is larger than any purely optical difference would justify.
Cut. Unusually important here. These stones must be cut to be brilliant. Windowing — where you can see straight through the middle of the stone — kills the neon effect and takes a large bite out of value.
Clarity. Unusually unimportant. Eye-visible inclusions are tolerated in paraíba in a way they would not be in, say, sapphire. Colour beats clarity, decisively.

Two caveats we will not bury. First, these are asking prices reported by dealers and specialist retailers, not cleared transactions — there is no public index for paraíba tourmaline as there is for diamond. Second, the dispersion is extreme: two stones of the same weight and origin can differ by a factor of five on colour alone. Anyone quoting you a single confident number per carat is selling, not informing.
Treatment and simulants
Heat treatment is common and generally accepted. Heating converts Mn3+ to Mn2+, removing the purple and pink components and leaving the blue-to-green that the market pays for. A great deal of the material on the market has been through this. The LMHC information sheet states plainly that paraíba tourmaline is commonly heated and that in some cases the treatment is not currently determinable. GIA says the same, and notes that the “pink sleeve” halos around tube inclusions, once used as evidence of an unheated stone, can survive heating. In practice, assume any paraíba tourmaline may have been heated unless a major lab says otherwise, and expect a real premium for a stone certified unheated.
Clarity treatments — laser drilling, fracture filling — occur but are uncommon, and reduce value when present.
The imitations and misrepresentations to know:
- Copper-bearing apatite. The single most common substitution. Neon blue-green apatite looks convincingly similar to an untrained eye and is a fraction of the price. It is also much softer — Mohs 5 against tourmaline’s 7–7.5 — and has different optical properties. A gemmologist separates them in minutes.
- Ordinary blue-green tourmaline and indicolite sold with “Paraíba” attached. Indicolite is coloured by iron, not copper, and never reaches paraíba saturation. If the stone is merely pretty rather than startling, it is probably indicolite — and worth a small fraction of what it is being priced at.
- Glass and composites. Neon blue glass, and glass-tourmaline assemblages. Look for gas bubbles and a suspiciously clean, even colour.
- Treated or dyed material. Fracture-filled and surface-treated stones periodically surface in the online market at implausible prices.
- “Paraíba-type”, “Paraíba-colour”, “Brazilian Paraíba style”. These phrases are chosen precisely because they are not claims. They usually mean the stone is not paraíba tourmaline at all.
- Origin asserted without a report. Given that GIA itself cannot determine origin without LA-ICP-MS, a verbal claim of Brazilian origin at Brazilian prices is worth nothing.
- Photographs. Neon gems photograph badly and are routinely over-saturated in listings. Ask for video under diffused daylight, not a spotlight.
Only a laboratory can confirm copper content, and only a well-equipped laboratory can determine origin. The LMHC information sheets set out the agreed wording; GIA’s Winter 2019 study explains the origin methodology in detail.
Read the origin line, then read the treatment line. Then decide.
“Paraíba tourmaline” on a report tells you it contains copper. It does not tell you where it came from, and at these prices that is the difference between a fair deal and a very expensive assumption.

What makes Paraíba tourmaline different from other tourmaline?
Copper. Paraíba tourmaline is cuprian elbaite — the same mineral species as ordinary tourmaline, but with copper (and manganese) in the crystal structure. Copper produces the vivid neon blue-to-green no other tourmaline achieves. Several hundred parts per million of copper are needed before the effect appears.
Can a Mozambican stone legally be called Paraíba tourmaline?
Yes. Since 2006 the LMHC and the major laboratories have treated “paraíba” as a variety name applying to copper- and manganese-bearing tourmaline of whatever geographic origin. A report reading “Variety: paraíba tourmaline, Origin: Mozambique” is entirely correct. What is not acceptable is letting a buyer infer Brazilian origin and charging Brazilian prices for it.
How much more is Brazilian material worth?
Fine Brazilian stones commonly trade at several times the price of African stones of similar appearance — often three to five times, sometimes more. The size of that premium is argued about in the trade; it clearly exceeds any measurable difference in average colour, and reflects scarcity and prestige as much as optics.
Is Paraíba tourmaline heated?
Commonly, yes, and the trade accepts it. Heating removes purple and pink components caused by trivalent manganese, leaving a cleaner blue-green. Both the LMHC and GIA note that heating is often not detectable, so assume it unless a major laboratory states otherwise. Certified unheated stones carry a premium.
Do I really need a lab report?
At any serious price, yes, and from a major laboratory. Copper content can only be confirmed by testing, and geographic origin can only be determined by quantitative trace-element analysis such as LA-ICP-MS. A stone sold as Brazilian without that paperwork should be priced as though its origin were undetermined.
Is Paraíba tourmaline a good investment?
We do not give investment advice, and this market makes the question harder than usual. Supply from the original Brazilian workings is largely exhausted, which supports prices. But the market is thin, prices are opaque, resale depends on finding one of a small number of specialist buyers, and retail-to-wholesale spreads are wide. Buy it because it is a remarkable stone, not as a financial position.
